勤政是对官员的基本要求之一。白居易这首诗又题作《直中书省》，意思是说“在中书省值班”，是值班的心情日志。

夜晚已经很深了，计时的钟鼓和沙漏都已经静悄悄的了。而此时的诗人还在值班。面对着满眼的文书诏令，诗人不仅没有烦躁之意，更多的是一种自豪感。为了自己国家的繁荣昌盛，多熬点夜多加点班不也是很值得骄傲的吗？“独坐黄昏谁是伴”，这样的一个问句放在其他诗人那里紧接着该是惆怅失落了。但是诗人并没有失落，相反带有一丝丝骄傲。这样的设问之后，诗人自己回答道“紫薇花对紫微郎”。唐玄宗开元元年，将中书省改名为“紫微省”，中书令改叫“紫微令”。“紫微省”的名称取自古人喜欢对应的星官。同样，“紫薇花”号称“花之圣者”，唐时宫廷里栽植紫薇，除了花开娇艳、持久不谢，自然也有花名相配的原因。白居易自居“紫微郎”的身份，晚上值班时又有“紫薇花”陪伴，在表达了一种恪尽职守的心态的同时，也忍不住透露出一丝自豪感。
